As an avid reader, my bookcase of garden books is overflowing. I want to shed some light on choosing the best gardening books for your own library. The opinions expressed are completely personal and in no way intend to defame or slander any author. Most books are great examples of enthusiasm, skill and hard work.
This list is 'work in progress'

Care-free plants, Reader's Digest, Ledward, D., 0276426312. Possibly the most useful stand-alone book in existence for designing borders. I use this book all the time; it is accessible, attractive and the plant choices are good. It helps one to select plants by site, such as 'windy and exposed', or 'open sloping site'.
Design & Plant A Mixed Border, Kingsbury, N.,0706378431. If you are serious about border planning, this is the book for you. Incredibly comprehensive and also strategic. The best 'how-to' I have come across, but sadly out of print now.
What Plant Where, Lancaster, R., 0751302104. A valuable classic. Easy to use plant selector; good pictures.
Rejuvenating A Garden, Anderton, S. 1856262766. What to do with overgrown plants? Not many books tackle this topic, and this one is excellent.
Complete Gardens CD-ROM, www.complete-gardens.co.uk. Not a book, but a very good plant selector on CD. There are more detailed categories than the RHS plant selector, and a huge range of plants. Also covers plant care written about by people who have the particular plant in their garden. (See Links)
